Making the Grade was a national and local level project designed to raise public awareness and stimulate cooperative action on behalf of American youth. Over the past 3 years, Making the Grade reviewed America's progress in solving problems that prevent youth from becoming productive workers and responsible citizens. It examined the areas of functional illiteracy, juvenile crime, school dropouts, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and youth unemployment. A national report card designed to grade America on progress in eradicating these problems contained all Ds and Fs. This report reviews project efforts during the past 3 years and features the collective outcomes of the project in local communities. Included are an executive summary, introduction, and sections explaining the project's premises and purposes, potential, and accomplishments. Other sections of the report focus on the national media campaign, the community engagement process, feedback from town summit meetings, and lessons learned and implications for action. A list of communities participating in the project, a list of national participating organizations, information on the National Collaboration for Youth and the National Assembly of National Voluntary Health and Social Welfare Organizations, Inc., and a description of products resulting from the Making the Grade project are appended.
