This booklet presents strategies developed by six adult basic education (ABE) staff members for helping students with specific learning problems. The strategies were devised through reading, talking with experts in the field, attending a workshop, and experimenting with modified teaching strategies. The guide addresses 36 specific learning problems grouped under these six headings: reading and language problems; writing problems; mathematics problems; study skills problems; memory problems; and behavior problems. For each problem, suggestions for remediation (ways to overcome and solve the problem) and compensation (ways to work around the problem) are presented. For background information, the guide contains an appendix that includes the federal legal definition of learning disabilities and a definition and checklist on learning disabilities provided by the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities.
