The Provision of Foreign Language Training to Industry for the FHE Provider.
Scullard, Sue
This study examines the state of foreign language training provided to industry by British colleges, offers guidelines on how colleges should respond to that market, and identifies created materials that will train college personnel. The study reports that the colleges have a good product to offer but that it is inaccessible to industry because of poor marketing, the dowdy image of many colleges, and the lack of response to company needs. It is suggested that colleges offer a minimum 50 hours training that is one-to-one, with self-study supplementing tutoring. Students who were found to be the most motivated are those who have experienced a crisis because they lacked a foreign language. Other motivators identified include a pro-language environment, a financial bonus, getting to use the language, and seeing that skill in the language will help students' careers. Industry was found to need the following from suppliers of foreign language training: (1) a thorough knowledge of the foreign language needs of industry in national/local terms; (2) an understanding of the language-related needs, particularly in terms of cultural briefing and foreign business protocol; (3) a broad understanding of the foreign language acquisition process; (4) a broad overview of foreign language training and delivery, from needs analysis to assessment; and (5) high quality service that includes instruction in a wide variety of languages, first-class teachers, and expertise in discrete areas of foreign languages, such as German for engineers.
