The Components of the Knowledge Base of Teacher Education: Questions Teacher Educators Have To Answer.
Murray, Frank B.
This discussion of the professionalization of teaching centers around areas of the teacher's work which are perceived as essential to the prospective teacher's education. The first of these is the arts and sciences component, in which prospective teachers acquire knowledge of the subject matter they will teach, and also a liberal education that will enable them to go beyond mere teaching techniques. The second is the pedagogical knowledge component in which the prospective teacher acquires a knowledge of teaching, educational research findings, and educational theory. The third is the clinical component, in which the prospective teacher practices and begins to master the teacher's art and craft. Descriptions are given of the reform efforts in each of these components. Among these efforts are: Project 30; the KBBT project of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education; and the Holmes Group which has published "Tomorrow's Schools." Discussion of the objectives of these efforts includes a brief review of their investigations of the problems of too few minority teachers, too few men, and too many academically untalented persons.
