Social Studies 20 and Social Studies 23. Interim Teacher Resource Manual.
Blevins, Kim, Ed.; Durksen, Virginia, Ed.
This teacher resource manual is a support document developed to assist teachers responsible for implementing the new (1989) Social Studies 20 and Social Studies 23 courses in Alberta, Canada. Following a brief introduction, the first section of the manual contains information on teaching social studies, discussing goals and objectives, teaching strategies, meeting student needs, and using technology in the classroom. Planning for instruction is the topic of the second section, which contains information on evaluation strategies, criteria, and instruments and techniques, and provides guidelines for planning the course on three levels: daily lesson plans, unit plans, and long-range course plans. The third section makes up the bulk of the document and contains eight organizational models plus numerous exercises and activities. These eight models deal with four topics: (1) "Development and Interaction of Nations: Nineteenth-Century Europe"; (2) "Interdependence in the Global Environment"; (3) "The Growth of the Global Perspective"; and (4) "Challenges in the Global Environment." Appendices provide social studies skill development charts that might be useful to teachers using this manual, as well as a goals statement for Alberta Education, a scope and sequence outline for all grades, and a governmental statement on developing desirable personal characteristics.
