Reshaping School Mathematics: A Philosophy and Framework for Curriculum.

As momentum for change in U.S. education continues to grow, questions about the nature and goals of mathematics education take on increasing urgency. This report proposes a framework for reform of school mathematics mainly through reshaping of the mathematics curriculum. Chapters included are: (1) "A Rationale for Change," describing changing conditions; (2) "A Practical Philosophy," discussing the nature of mathematics and the goals of mathematics education; (3) "Redesign from a Technological Perspective," discussing the use of calculators and computers; (4) "Redesign from a Research Perspective," discussing ways mathematics instruction needs to change based on numerous study findings; and (5) "Framework for Change," suggesting six principles, goals, and enabling conditions for the mathematics curriculum of the future.
