This report presents findings of a 1988 survey of the salaries, benefits, and working conditions of early childhood personnel employed at day care centers in the Cleveland, Ohio area. It is emphasized that the salary survey describes what is and not what should be. The report is organized into three major sections. The first section covers methodology. In the second section, salaries are analyzed by position, education, length of time in the profession and in the present position, and type of program. Then, in a profile section, all the data is gathered together by position titles including aides, assistant teachers, head teachers, teacher-directors, directors, and administrators. The profile section also includes information on Child Development Associates (CDAs) and heads of households. The third section covers the three previous surveys, conducted in 1976, 1979, and 1984, as well as the survey of 1988. Data from 216 CAEYC (Cleveland Association for the Education of Young Children) members from the 1988 survey is analyzed along with data from the earlier surveys. Appendices provide definitions, a statistical analysis, demographics, a summary of survey respondents, and comments from respondents concerning their work. A teacher, aide, or administrator can use this report to find information on salaries and benefits specific to their position. It is hoped that the report will open up discussion of wages, benefits, and working conditions, and serve as a rationale for increasing salaries of child care staff. (RH)
