MESA/MEP at American River College: Year One Evaluation Report.
Lee, Beth S.; And Others
In 1989, the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA)/Minority Engineering Program (MEP) was initiated at American River College. The MESA/MEP program recruits Black, Hispanic, and Native American students and provides assistance, encouragement, and enrichment programs to help them succeed in the fields of mathematics, engineering, science, and computer science. The MESA/MEP program is designed to serve as a bridge between high school MESA programs and university MEP programs for students who attended a community college before enrolling in a university. This program evaluation begins with an overview of the MESA/MEP Program. Next, a description is provided of the program's activities, including scholarships, awards, and honors; leadership development efforts; recruitment of potential MESA/MEP students; enrichment programs (e.g., tours to California universities and resume workshop); and support services/supplies for students (e.g., weekly meetings, bulletin board, study halls, class clustering). The next section of the report is a program evaluation, including information on the student population, persistence, grade point averages, and affective outcomes evidenced in individual, group, and staff interviews. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are presented. Appended information includes a sample MESA/MEP brochure, evaluation forms, personal, group, and staff interview summaries, a list of MESA/MEP students transferring in fall 1990, a library list, and information on developing a MESA/MEP program.
