This paper describes the structure of a superintendent network in each of two western states (Washington and Idaho); what the networks look like; and how superintendent attributes such as age, ethnicity, gender, salary, years of experience, and size of school district influence the network. The study further compares similarities and differences between the two states' networks. For purposes of identification and examination, superintendent attributes are classified into three conceptual categories or factors that seem important to the development and maintenance of networks: affiliation, accessibility, and status. A sociometric self-report survey was submitted to 299 Washington superintendents and 116 Idaho superintendents, with response rates of 87% and 75% respectively. The data gathered for each network are presented in three phases: characteristic description, identification matrix, and sociometric graphing. The examination of the networks in Washington and Idaho reveals that status and accessibility are important factors influencing the establishment of connections within the network. Affiliation, as indicated by ethnicity, gender, age, and degree or credentialling institution, appears to be weak. (JAM)
