A project contacted approximately 800 voluntary organizations in northwest England to describe the learning activities in which volunteers take part. Data were collected through mail surveys, telephone interviews, face-to-face interviews, general observation, structured time observation, and case study. The following were among the findings reported: (1) adults join voluntary organizations to do rather than to learn, but doing seems to require learning activity or even to be learning activity; (2) the formal learning activities were teaching, discussion, training, and assessment and certification; (3) the informal learning activities were practice learning, apprenticeship learning, learning from experience, and learning through social interaction; and (4) although there is little evidence that adults join voluntary activities for reasons of personal development, there is ample evidence that voluntary organization activity of all kinds is a vehicle for the personal development of members.
