The College Admissions Practices Project examined the effects of rising admissions standards on postsecondary minority enrollment. A national survey of 158 institutions gathered data on changes since 1980 in the following areas: enrollment, faculty data, admissions practices, and racially motivated incidents on campus. In addition, questions were asked on recruitment and retention policies and whether there was a legislatively mandated policy in the institution's state which addressed issues concerning the postsecondary education of minority and educationally/economically disadvantaged students. Survey results are presented in three sections: changes in racial/ethnic distribution of students and faculty between 1980 and 1986, changes in admissions standards since 1980, and institution policies concerning access/retention for minority and educationally/economically disadvantaged students. The study found a relationship between rising admissions standards and the decline in minority enrollment, suggesting that the minority enrollment problems are continuing and in some cases worsening.
