Education and European Competence. ERT Study on Education and Training in Europe.
European Round Table of Industrialists, Brussels (Belgium).
Noting the high unemployment and the need for increased education for employment among the peoples of Europe, the European Round Table of Industrialists conducted a study to identify the main problems related to European education and training from industry's point of view. The study's goal was to draw up practical recommendations for educational administrators, institutions, and industry on how education in Europe could be improved to keep pace with the constantly changing competitive environment. The working group organized into subcommittees and task forces concentrating on basic education, higher education, vocational education and training, management training, and lifelong learning and adult education. The group reviewed research studies, surveyed European companies, and interviewed administrators to gather data. As a result of the research, the working group identified the following issues and made recommendations: the revitalization of basic education, cooperation between industry and educational institutions, the importance of technical and professional education, compatibility and cooperation in education, and the importance of lifelong learning and adult education. A matrix for implementing the recommendations was constructed, matching the issues to tasks to be carried out by industry, educational institutions, educational authorities, government, and international organizations.
