Increasing Middle School History Students' Performance through the Implementation of a Museum Curriculum.
Bates, Donald L.
The Student Museum and Center for the Social Studies was established in the community where this practicum was conducted in the 1985-1986 school year, as a part of the county school system. Two years were spent refurbishing the existing building and building exhibits. However, no curriculum existed for the full utilization of these exhibits. Eighth-grade students visited the museum with little or no preparation, few planned activities, and no follow-up to the visit. The exhibits did not formally enhance the existing eighth-grade curriculum, and thus many teachers chose not to participate. Also, the museum did not enhance any of the required objectives or units contained in the county curriculum guide or state requirements. The goals of the practicum were: (1) to enhance students' ability to successfully accomplish district and state requirements in social studies; (2) to establish a museum in-service program for eighth-grade teachers to promote better utilization of museum facilities; and (3) to enhance the over-all social studies program as it existed in the district. A museum curriculum was implemented, and an in-service program was developed to introduce teachers to the museum program. All of the schools that participated in the program met the objectives of the practicum. Results indicated that a social studies museum curriculum enhanced the students' ability to successfully accomplish local and state requirements, enhanced the over-all social studies program in the district, and led to better utilization of the museum facilities.
