A kindergarten teacher implemented a 10-week practicum study designed to enhance the English acquisition of 38 limited English proficient kindergarten children. Primary goals of the study were to: (1) narrow the learning gap between the English speaking children and the limited English proficient children; and (2) develop language skills the children would need in first grade. To attain these goals, pretests and posttests were designed and administered to assess students' English comprehension. Test items were related to prescribed kindergarten objectives. In addition, whole language experiences were developed; literature was selected; sixth-grade peer teachers were recruited; and communication with students' families was established. Practicum evaluation data indicated that outcomes were positive. Students improved in their English comprehension. Many staff members expressed interest in whole language strategies and came to observe classroom activities. Pretests and posttests, and a resource list of 42 books for shared reading and other resources, are appended. Nearly 30 references are cited. (Author/RH)
