Curriculum Guide for School Library Media Program.
Brandt, Garnet
Presented by 15 staff and school media specialists among others, this giude is a model for developing school library media programs that will meet the information retrieval needs of students in the twenty-first century. The guide incorporates the new Iowa State Guidelines and provides for the infusion of the following areas into educational programs: career education; global studies; multi-cultural/nonsexist; technology in the curriculum; media/information skills; guidance; activity programs; and higher order thinking. Standards for library media programs are provided, including qualifications for library personnel, and policies and procedures for selection, replacement, gift acceptance, weeding, and reconsideration for school library media center and text materials. An action plan based on the American Association of School Libraries' publication, "Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs," is suggested together with worksheets for documenting progress made over several years in implementing the action steps. A program mapping instrument for instructors is included. Specific guidelines for conducting needs assessments and establishing mission statements and goals and accompanying worksheets are provided. A procedural guide addresses the integration of new teaching and learning activities into existing curricula. Appendixes include relevant administrative policies and objectives as well as model case studies from schools in various areas of the United States. (SD)
