Credit earned by examination at the University of Texas at Austin is equivalent to credit earned by taking the academic course, but cannot be counted as credit earned in residence. In the 1988-89 testing year, eight colleges or schools of the university participated in the credit-by-examination program. Evaluations of 29,698 test scores from 50 subject areas from 32 departments or divisions are recorded in this report. Many students took more than one examination. There were 12,343 participants; 8,530 of these earned credit for at least one course. A total of 14,935 qualifying test scores generated 79,228 semester hours of credit eligibility. Test results are reported alphabetically for 18 subject areas: (1) biology; (2) chemistry; (3) Chinese; (4) computer sciences; (5) data processing and analysis; (6) economics; (7) English; (8) French; (9) German; (10) government; (11) history; (12) Latin; (13) mathematics; (14) physics; (15) psychology; (16) Russian; (17) sociology; and (18) Spanish. Documentation of test results in all 50 subject areas, the overall impact of credit by examination on the participating schools and colleges, and comparisons of the 1988-89 test results with results from previous years are included in the summary section of the report. English, Spanish, and mathematics were the areas in which students most often attempted to earn credit by examination. There are 81 tables of examination results and four figures. (SLD)
