This monograph presents a detailed outline of the major components of a comprehensive school health program. The program provides students with health instruction, delivers health services to students and staff, and provides a safe and healthful school environment. The focus of the publication is on the role and responsibilities of the school nurse in implementing the program. The eight chapters cover the following areas: (1) the history of school health programs; (2) planning, implementing and evaluating health services; (3) health counseling; (4) health education; (5) special education; (6) medical care of school personnel; (7) non-registered nurse personnel; and (8) the framework of practice and philosophy of school nursing.
