Children, Families & Cities: Programs That Work at the Local Level.
Kyle, John E., Ed.
This book profiles over 30 local programs and policies designed to meet the needs of children and families in cities and towns. The first chapter concerns the examination of issues related to children and families in the context of policy and planning. It calls attention to the need for comprehensiveness and coordination in the strategic implementation of programs and policies. The next four chapters deal with child care, youth employment, homelessness, and adolescent pregnancy prevention. The concluding chapter offers some lessons learned from the project regarding ways to serve children and families at the city and town level. The lessons provide a framework from which new or improved programs can be launched. Each chapter includes definitions, statistics, causes, effects, and general information related to a topic. Chapters also analyze major issues or themes pertinent to the topic and provide profiles of local programs or policies. Finally, each chapter includes a list of references and selected resources.
