In 1987 and 1988, the New Brunswick (Canada) Department of Advanced Education and Training conducted follow-up surveys of graduates of full-time training programs to determine their labor market success. In 1987, of the 2,319 graduates surveyed, 1,574 (68%) responded, while in 1988, 1,578 (69%) of the 2,302 graduates surveyed responded. In both 1987 and 1988, 80% of the respondents were single, slightly less than half were female, approximately two-thirds had completed 12th grade as their highest level of education prior to entering the training program. The percentage of respondents finding employment improved gradually from 59% in 1983 to 74% in 1987 and 78% in 1988. In both 1987 and 1988, Health/Community Services respondents had the highest employment rate. Between the two years, there were significant declines in the employment rate of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, Protective Services, and Wood and Related Materials respondents, with Wood and Related Materials having the lowest employment rate (48%) and the lowest percentage of respondents having work related to their training (40%). The percentage of employed respondents working in a field related to their training increased from 54% in 1985 to 60% in 1987 and 62% in 1988. Close to 90% of the respondents in both years were working in New Brunswick. In 1988, the average reported full-time earnings were $340 per week, an increase of $40 per week over 1987; the average wages for females rose from 70% of this total to 76%.
