Home English Literacy for Parents: An ESL Family Literacy Curriculum.
Terdy, Dennis; Bercovitz, Laura
The Home English Literacy for Parents (H.E.L.P.) Project and curriculum were developed and implemented in a variety of school programs in the northwest suburban Chicago area. Project services were offered to parents for 5 hours a week at 7 school sites. The curriculum was intended for implementation in a typical adult English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) education program. The project integrates practical, commonly-used adult language skills and focuses on developing parenting skills. The curriculum packet consists of: (1) a description of student instructional levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced); (2) Phase I of instruction (English survival competencies); (3) Phase II of instruction (school-related competencies); (4) teaching techniques for Phase II; and (5) sample lesson plans for Phase II competencies.
