Implementing a Manipulative, Piagetian Mathematics Curriculum for Primary, Educationally Handicapped Pupils.
Burke, James Patrick
The practicum paper describes the development of a mathematics program for primary-level educationally handicapped students, to be implemented by resource room teachers. Developmental areas covered include: numbers (0-10), addition and subtraction (sums to 10), place value, and time and money. The 10-month intervention period was preceded and followed by testing. Intervention emphasized the use of manipulatives (coin and bead sets, counters, attribute blocks, geoboards, interlocking cubes, unit cubes, tens rods) and games in small group settings. Results indicated that: (1) 14 of the 20 students improved their overall scores on an oral instructor-directed test by 20 points; (2) 14 of the students learned to write numerals and count up to 10; (3) nine students learned to solve simple monetary problems; (4) 10 students learned to solve simple subtraction problems; (5) seven students learned to count up to 99; and (6) 11 students learned to recognize the monetary value of various coins.
