Improving Parent-School and Child-School Relationships When Evaluation for a Gifted Program Does Not Result in Placement by Increasing the Opportunities for Communication.
Carter, Elizabeth F.
This practicum attempted to increase parental understanding and acceptance of the process for referral, screening, testing, and selecting children for a gifted program in a northern Florida community; to improve the self-concept of children who were not found to be eligible; and to decrease the time spent by school personnel in resolving problems that occur when referred students are not placed. The project involved revising the screening criteria (giving less weight to teacher and parent rating scales) and developing a sequential plan for both verbal and written communication with parents from the time they expressed interest in having their child in the gifted program until after the selection had occurred. Evaluation indicated that a majority of the parents of students referred and evaluated during the implementation period participated in an evening meeting, a conference after the testing, and the selection process. As a result there were only two problem situations resulting from a group of 35 parents. In addition, the students related positively to the process and no evidence of damage to self concept from nonplacement in the gifted program was noted. (Author/DB)
