This report on transiency and stability in the Los Angeles Unified School District continues a series that has been augmented annually since 1968-69. Transiency refers to the adjusted numbers of entrants and leavers, expressed as a percentage (rate); stability refers to the student population that has remained in the school all year, expressed as a percentage (rate) of the starting enrollment. Information on the number of students who entered and left each month was gathered from all regular and magnet schools. Rankings were computed for elementary, secondary, and magnet schools, by administrative region and division, with a district summary. Transiency rates reported in this study were computed using a formula refined in the 1983-84 study and cannot be directly compared to the rates before 1982-83. Similarly, a refined stability formula has been used since the 1983-84 report. The following overall findings are reported: (1) schools of choice (magnet schools) as a whole, and in their region and division clusters, show the highest stability and the lowest transiency of all school groupings; (2) the district-wide stability factor declined slightly from 1978-79 to 1980-81, from 76.6 percent to 74.1 percent, with improvements over the next 2 years; (3) the stability rate has increased slightly from 1983-84 to 1985-86, from 78.15 percent to 81.37 percent; and (4) the transiency rate has decreased from 1982-83 to 1985-86, from 39.09 percent to 33.75 percent. Historical data are reported for 1968-1978, 1978-1983, and 1982-1986. Statistical data are included on eight tables. (FMW)
