Inputs and Outputs of Sponsored Comprehensive Schools in Israel.
Egozi, Moshe; And Others
This report examines the educational opportunities offered by specially funded comprehensive secondary schools established in Israeli development towns during the 1960s. The results of an analysis of the 1980-81 academic year budgets of 51 schools in 26 towns, and an examination of the schools' absorption of students and their holding power, are summarized in Hebrew. A third study analyzes data for the academic years 1976-77 through 1978-79 on 45 schools and their approximately 31,000 students. Variables examined include the following: (1) type of school (sponsored or not); (2) comprehensiveness (single- or multi-track); (3) teacher quality; and (4) pupil composition. Pupil variables examined included the following: (1) background; (2) academic achievement; and (3) military achievement. Comparisons are made among 45 sponsored schools, and between the sponsored schools and 24 non-sponsored urban schools. Findings indicate that the sponsored comprehensive schools provide their students with opportunities that are different from the academic, mixed, and vocational urban schools examined, but further conclusions were inconclusive due to methodological difficulties. A list of references is included. The appendices include statistical data. (FMW)
