Fine Arts Evaluation.
Nanaimo School District #68 (British Columbia).
The fine arts as defined by the Ministry of Education (British Columbia) include music, art, and drama with the curriculum focusing on two concepts: creation and appreciation. One of the aims of School District #68 (Nanaimo) is to provide students with the opportunity to gain exposure to, and experience in, fine arts. The Fine Arts Evaluation Committee was formed on November 9, 1987 by the Board of School Trustees of School District #68 as part of their ongoing commitment to evaluation of programs. Sub-committees were formed for the areas of music, art, and drama in order to: (1) reflect the integrity of each subject area; (2) utilize to the fullest the expertise of the committee members; and (3) share the workload. Information was gathered through the use of questionnaires sent to principals, subject specialists, and classroom teachers. The questionnaires collected data about the following aspects of the fine arts program: (1) support for the program; (2) existing program; (3) personnel; (4) facilities; and (5) funding. Additional data was gathered by means of interviews and observations made at various schools in the District. A number of recommendations are made by the committee in each fine arts area. Recommendations of the committee as a whole include the following: (1) that although traditionally there has been a music coordinator for the district, that leadership has been lacking in the areas of drama and art and needs to be corrected; and (2) that the coordinator positions should have input into budgetary, program, and staffing decisions. In-depth reports for each fine arts area form a substantial part of this document; each report includes summaries and conclusions, and specific area recommendations for both the elementary and secondary levels. Three appendixes containing respectively, the Fine Arts Evaluation Interim Report of 1988; teachers' comments and survey response data; and biographical sketches of the teachers involved. (PPB)
