In Her Own Write: Maryland Women's History Resource Packet, 1989.
Maryland State Commission for Women, Baltimore.; Maryland State Dept. of Education, Baltimore.
This packet is designed to raise precollege students' understanding and awareness of writing by women, to encourage women's studies in the curriculum, and to assist in identifying bias in language use and English/language arts curriculum materials. It can also be used by companies or community organizations interested in similar issues. It supplements existing materials about women in literature and journalism and provides language arts activities related to women's contributions to society. Section 1 has background information for teachers on: (1) women in literary arts; (2) women in journalism; and (3) lists of women writers. Section 2 provides information on infusing women's studies into the English and language arts curriculum. Section 3 includes biographical profiles of 50 Maryland women writers and Women's Hall of Fame inductees. Section 4 contains questionnaire responses and personal reflections from contemporary women writers who live in Maryland. Section 5 provides student activities for elementary, middle, secondary, and postsecondary levels as well as activities for worksites or community organizations. Section 6 provides a checklist for identifying bias in materials and methods of countering bias. Section 7 lists print, non-print, and organizational resources related to women writers and women in literature. Section 8 is a speakers list for Women's History Month (March 1989). (CT)
