Arguing that much of the information needed in the future will be available only online, using computers, modems, and telephone lines, this four-part guide is designed to provide the basic information on online communication that is needed by beginners. The introduction to the guide includes a definition of online communication, a rationale for teaching online activities, and a few words of advice for the teacher who is getting started. Focusing on online applications, the first of four chapters describes online uses (e.g., electronic messaging, research and reference, and other curriculum- and education-related applications) and courseware packages designed for use in schools. Concerned with instructional strategies, the second chapter outlines learner outcomes and curriculum activities designed to help teachers integrate online skills into the curriculum, and suggests activities that use electronic messaging or online searching for use in language arts projects, science/problem solving projects, and social studies projects. The third chapter discusses basic hardware and software needed to begin using online communication, describes the use of modems, and provides information on communications software programs and vendors. A telecommunications budget worksheet is included. The fourth chapter provides an annotated listing of 12 selected online services, each including a source for further information. A glossary of online communications terms and a list of selected journal articles and journals on online communication are included to assist teachers in getting started online. (SD)
