Three adult education programs being conducted in Japan are described in the case studies in this packet. The first case study (by K. Moro'oka) describes an adult education center in Ohyama in which education and community services are integrated. The program first put emphasis on community building, then on the development of human resources. Many types of education are offered. The second case (by M. Toko) describes the Citizens' Learning Network in Munakata. It concentrates on leisure education and often uses volunteer teachers. The final program, described by T. Fukuchi, concerns the founding of a university for senior citizens. Called Inamino Gakuen, the institution is the first of its kind, providing continuing education for the aged. The university has a four-year undergraduate college course and a two-year graduate school. The university seeks to challenge students' thinking, develop students' faculties, and promote health and well being. The curriculum includes general education, major subjects, and club activities. A correspondence university program is also offered.
