This handbook discusses the following types of parent involvement in education: (1) decision-making; (2) parents as educators; (3) advocacy; (4) school support; and (5) parent education and support. The benefits of parent involvement are outlined. Examples from New York City's 1987-88 Parent Involvement Program (PIP) demonstrate that parent involvement works in the following instances: (1) when parents and teachers build new relationships; (2) when there is effective and caring leadership; (3) when there are many ways to get involved; (4) when there is communication with everyone; (5) when schools remove some of the barriers to participation; and (6) when connections are made with other community agencies. Photographs accompany the text, and quotations for PIP participants are included. A worksheet on planning a successful parent involvement project, and a list of resources conclude the booklet. (BJV)
