High School Dropouts: A Problem for Research, Policy, and Practice.
Rumberger, Russell W.
California Public Schools Forum, v1 Fall 1986
The problem of high school dropouts has generated increased interest among researchers, policymakers, and educators in recent years. This paper examines the many issues involved in trying to understand and solve this complex social and educational problem. The issues are grouped into four areas, related to the incidence, causes, consequences, and solutions to the problem. Within each area, the discussion identifies the important issues involved, the current state of research on the issues, and considerations for future research. The paper also attempts to portray the particular interests of the various groups that are concerned with these issues and the many disciplinary perspectives that have been or should be represented in understanding them. Data are presented on two tables. A 44-item list of references is included. (BJV)
