A Portfolio of Community College Initiatives in Rural Economic Development.
Thomas, Margaret G.
Community colleges across the United States have initiated programs that are making an impact on the productivity of rural America and its residents. Profiles of 20 community and technical college initiatives in rural economic development are contained in this report intended for use by community and technical college administrators. The programs include the following: diverse approaches of training for rural cottage industry operators; grants for community organizers; grower co-ops; incubators without walls; rural diversified enterprise centers; venture capital networks; advanced manufacturing demonstrations; government procurement programs; farm business management programs; high technology specialization; rural leadership conferences; service industry recruitment; economic development classes; workplace literary programs; and direct business startups. Each profile describes (1) the genesis of the program; (2) recruitment, delivery and staffing for the program; (3) participants; (4) funding sources; (5) linkages with traditional economic development organizations; (6) a local contact person; and (7) available materials. This report also summarizes 15 state rural development community-college-based programs in an appendix. (ALL)
