This research examined stress in the kindergarten in the public school system of North Carolina. A questionnaire was designed to collect information from public school kindergarten teachers concerning seven stressors: (1) academic tasks that students were developmentally unable to handle; (2) death of a close family member or friend; (3) the move to a new home or school; (4) a new sibling; (5) personal injury or illness; (6) separation or divorce of parents; and (7) family tension (other than number 6). Teachers were requested to indicate the number of students in their classes who were displaying signs of stress due to each of the stressors. Teachers then ranked the severity of the stress and added comments. The data revealed that the 419 teachers who responded perceived their students to be exhibiting symptoms of stress caused by many factors. Trauma in the family resulting in the separation or divorce of a child's parents was cited as causing the most severe symptoms of anxiety. Academic tasks that students were developmentally unable to handle caused the next-to-most severe symptoms. The data indicated that the teachers surveyed felt pressured by parents, colleagues, and established curriculum to meet academic objectives. (RJC)
