Teaching Corporate Culture Using Interactive Video Training.
Gardner, P. R.
The Westinghouse Hanford Company Total Quality Program includes the development of Hanford General Employee Training (HGET), an interactive video course. The commitment to total quality is developed in both new and requalifying employees by requiring them to make positive choices when confronted with real life scenarios showing violations of safety, security, and quality standards. This courseware is different from most HGET courses in that it puts the trainee into a role-playing mode and requires him or her to recognize and respond in a fashion consistent with corporate policy. A strong emphasis is placed on changing workers' attitudes toward safety, security, and quality practices. The interactive videodisk program employed design strategies that encouraged the desired modifications in the affective domain. Experiences with the prototype version of the courseware are being evaluated as the full course design is being finalized. The design of HGET follows principles of instructional development as the process focuses on user work practices from the very beginning, incorporates empirical measurement of effectiveness, and employs an iterative design.
