Concerned Technology 1989: Electronic Aids for People with Special Needs.
Sandhu, Jim Singh; Richardson, Steve
In light of the implementation of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Amendments Act of 1986 requiring that all electronic equipment purchased by the U.S. Government be accesible to the handicapped. this directory lists several hundred electronic aids for the disabled. The introduction humorously reviews the state of the art in software, artificial intelligence, speech recognition, scanners, robotics, and screens, as related to public policy. In the directory section, many of the devices are pictured. Entries usually include the name, a description, price (in British pounds or U.S. dollars) options, and the supplier. Devices are listed under the following categories: alternative input and general systems, communication aids, multi-purpose speech synthesizers, visual impairment, hearing impairment, speech impairment, health and therapy, mobility, telephone equipment, environmental control, alarm systems, switches, and miscellaneous. Also provided are a bibliography on education, training, and employment; an index of equipment; an index of switches; and a directory of suppliers. An appendix lists databases and publications of the Handicapped Persons Research Unit. (DB)
