Republic of Palau Vocational Teacher Training Project. Summer 1989 (May 24, 1989-January 31, 1990).
Tanigawa, Christine
A vocational teacher training project was designed to provide a short-term period of training at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to upgrade the computer and secretarial skills of three potential vocational education teachers from the Republic of Palau. The training consisted of scheduled computer courses at Kapiolani Community College, individualized computer training at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and other activities designed to provide secretarial training in office procedures, English skills, and writing skills. All three participants earned completion certificates for five computer courses taken at Kapiolani Community College, made contacts with individuals in their fields of work at the University and at other institutions, and took part in other activities designed to allow them to benefit from their time in Hawaii. The three participants completed the courses and became more proficient in practical applications of the software, concentrating on the word processing capabilities of the program. The amount of proficiency achieved depended on the amount of hands-on practice time each participant spent with the computers. Recommendations were made to strengthen the program by better planning and determining relevance of courses. (KC)
