To examine three aspects of the relationship of Black leadership and White press--Black elected officials' (BEOs) views on press coverage of the Black community and on their own dealings with or treatment by the press, and their use of the news media for job-related needs--a study surveyed Blacks from three levels of elective office, school board representatives, mayors, and state legislators. Subjects, 113 Black state legislators, 80 Black mayors, and 359 Black school board members, responded to questionnaires by mail that measured respondent views on performance of "the major White-owned newspaper" in the community. The sample represented a low response rate in relation to the number of questionnaires sent out. Findings indicated that (1) BEOs "have no use" for the White press; and (2) they find press coverage of the Black community to be insensitive, incomplete, and inappropriate.
