Homeless Student State Plan.
Blesh, Robert E.
This grant application requests $50,000 from the Federal Government under the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act, Title VIIB, for the Connecticut State Department of Education to continue the Office of Coordinator of Education and Homeless Children and Youth for fiscal year 1989-90. Based on data collected by the State Departments of Human Resources, Children and Youth Services, and Education, it was determined that approximately 3,555 school-aged children were served by the State's homeless shelters in 1987-88 and this number is expected to increase. The Coordinator will continue to provide the following services that will assure access to education for homeless children: (1) gather data on the number and location of homeless children and youth; (2) identify the nature and extent of problems in placing homeless children and youth in elementary and secondary schools; (3) identify difficulties in programming to meet the special needs of such children; (4) develop and implement the State Plan to provide for the education of each homeless child in the state; and (5) serve as representative from the State Department of Education to the State Interagency Council on the Homeless sponsored by the Department of Human Resources.
