The reliability and validity of the Social Avoidance and Distress (SAD) and Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) scales developed by D. Watson and R. Friend (1969) were tested for their use with university students in Thailand. Thai translations of both tests were administered to 176 university students on two occasions, with a month between testings, to assess test reliability. The test-retest correlation of the SAD was 0.77 and that of the FNE was 0.85. To assess construct validity, the test was administered to 958 students. Then, 138 students who received SAD scores lower than 3 and 157 students who received SAD scores of 11 or above were selected along with 62 students who received FNE scores lower than 9 and 108 of those who received FNE scores 18 or higher. Those who agreed to further participation were grouped by high and low social anxiety scores (low SAD = 108, high SAD = 126; low FNE = 35, high FNE = 58). Subjects were assigned to one of three conditions in which social anxiety about group participation was manipulated. Results were correlated with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory of C. D. Spielberger et al. (1970). The validity was generally satisfactory for both scales. Thai students reacted differently than the Canadian students with whom the scale was developed, but the high reliability and satisfactory validity indicated that these scales are suitable for use with university students in Thailand.
