Using the Newspaper in Upper Elementary and Middle Grades.
Morse, Julie C.
Newspapers are valuable educational resources because they contain material that is varied, up-to-date, and interesting to students. This document is a guide for elementary and middle school teachers who want to incorporate newspapers into daily classroom instruction. There are ten lessons for each of the five subject areas covered. Each lesson describes its objective, lists materials needed, and provides detailed teaching instructions. In addition, a list of 20 supplementary activities follows each section. Section 1, "Know Your Newspaper," contains lessons about the newspaper itself. Students learn about newspaper make-up and terminology, news story forms, news writing styles, the role of advertising in the newspaper business, and the role of the newspaper in a democracy. Section 2, "Language Arts," includes plans for using newspapers to develop grammar and writing skills, foster creative writing and critical reading, and improve student listening and reading comprehension skills. Section 3, "Science," contains lessons that teach how science affects daily life. Students study newspaper weather reports, identify science-related jobs, examine scientific aspects of the newspaper industry, and explore scientific issues in the news. Section 4, "Math," contains lessons that help students shop wisely and see real-life applications for mathematics. They learn about the stock market, practice metric measurement, study newspaper charts and graphs, and use the sports section to practice basic mathematics skills. Section 5, "Social Studies," includes plans that teach about current events, cultural differences, geography, and the responsibility inherent in U.S. citizenship. Eighteen worksheets, corresponding to specific lessons, are included in the appendix. (GEA)
