The need to reinforce the skills of science teachers and supervisors and the need to increase student performance in the sciences have become critical national concerns. The importance of quality science education grows as science and technology continue to be major factors in our daily lives. New York City has recognized the need to enhance science teaching by providing assistance in staff development. This publication was produced to serve as a resource for those involved in upgrading and developing science programs in the schools. Included in this publication are articles addressing the philosophy and methodology of elementary science teaching, exemplary lesson plans, approaches to working with children, activities for students and teachers, information on interrelating reading and science in the classroom, field trips, stimulating science interest, science fairs, a textbook review, evaluation techniques, and a bibliography.
