A nationwide survey was conducted to determine what skills and knowledge kindergarten teachers consider important for preschoolers to have upon entering kindergarten. A sample of 400 randomly selected school districts were invited to contribute kindergarten readiness guidelines and report cards; 78 schools and school districts from the United States and Canada responded. From these materials, a list of 141 skills and concepts was compiled and organized into five categories: (1) language development; (2) cognitive development; (3) physical development; (4) reading readiness; and (5) social-emotional development. Teachers (N=12,500) were invited to rate each item in the survey on a five-point scale according to the item's importance for children entering kindergarten. Response data is presented. The first 38 pages of this document consist of the management survey of the study, the survey instrument itself (the World Book School Readiness Skills Study), and a World Book news release. The next 22 pages consist of a separate pamphlet for parents entitled "Getting Ready for School" that reports on these skill areas to the effect that over 3,000 kindergarten teachers identified 105 desirable readiness skills in this survey. The pamphlet offers a variety of information and suggestions about child development, skills, and activities. (PCB)
