Polarization and Persuasion: Integrating the Elaboration Likelihood Model with Explanations of Group Polarization.
Mongeau, Paul A.
Interest has recently focused on group polarization as a function of attitude processes. Several recent reviewers have challenged polarization researchers to integrate the explanations of polarization to existing theories of attitude change. This review suggests that there exists a clear similarity between the social comparison and persuasive arguments explanation and the central and peripheral routes to persuasion in the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). Previous dual process models of polarization are shown to be consistent with this perspective. Suggestions for future research and methodological considerations are highlighted.
