This study examined the need for a program that would enable students in the middle grades to receive additional instruction/assistance in the basic skills outside of the regular classroom situation. The program was designed to assist students in reading, language usage, and mathematics. It sought to develop a model for the intergenerational tutoring program, to modify the program according to the needs of the specific communities, and to implement the program systemwide. Seven tutors and 25 students participated in the program. Staff development training for tutors included tutoring strategies and procedures for skill building. Skills acquisition was achieved through workbook activities and recreational reading. The tutors were expected to use suggested techniques and materials in their tutoring sessions and give feedback to the program supervisor at the end of each class. Results indicated that senior citizens had sufficient basic skills knowledge to tutor students in the middle grades, thereby providing the students with additional opportunities for school success. Students showed growth in the areas in which they were tutored. Tutors and tutees benefited from the experience of participating in the intergenerational tutoring program. (Author/ABL)
