From Bonding Wires to Banding Women. Proceedings of the International Consultation on Micro-Chips Technology (Manila, Philippines, October 1986).
Center for Women's Resources, Quezon City (Philippines).
In October 1986, 40 women from 12 countries gathered in the Philippines for a 10-day meeting of organizers, educators, and workers affected by and confronting the international electronics industry in microchip plants and in automated offices. Participants were from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Trinidad, Jamaica, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. This report summarizes the various issues raised by the women, from their treatment in microchip plants in developing nations to the problems of automated offices in developed countries, and the struggle to organize or unionize women to protect themselves and better their conditions. The summaries fall under several headings: (1) the global context of the problems; (2) stories of women working in the microchips industry; (3) local strategies for fighting back (organizing); (4) linking-up struggles for organizing; and (5) post-conference reflections. An annotated list of resources completes the document. (KC)
