How Many Kentuckians: Population Forecasts, 1985-2020. The 1988 Edition.
Louisville Univ., KY. Urban Studies Center.
This report contains the latest official population forecasts for Kentucky. Population projections are revised periodically, based on the emergence of recent demographic trends that are inconsistent with assumptions used in earlier forecasts or the revelation of major developments that would impact future population growth. Recent trends are analyzed through annual population estimates derived from recorded births, deaths, and indicators of migration, taking into account changes in the fertility and migration components of the projections model. The 1980 census counts, the 1985 estimate, and projections for the years 1990, 1995, 2000, 2010, and 2020 are presented for the state, its 15 area development districts, its 7 metropolitan statistical areas, and its 120 counties. Tables present detailed population projections by gender and five-year age groups through 85 years and over. Age summaries are also presented for the population 0-18 years and 65 years and over. A cohort-component model projects the household population and the group quarters population aged 65 years and over in each county. Annual estimates 1981-1986 and annual projections for 1986-2020 are available by single year of age and two racial groups, white and nonwhite. The projections anticipate slow growth in Kentucky for the next few decades, with 21 counties expected to lose population. The state's non-metropolitan areas are expected to grow by 7.5 percent, whereas the metropolitan areas are expected to experience only a 4.6 percent increase. The state's number of elderly people is expected to increase, comprising 13.7 percent of the total population by 1995. This report also details its forecast methodology and includes locator maps.
