Regeneration: You and Your Environment. A Guide for Teachers.
Munson, Carol, Ed.; Gilroy, Diane, Ed.
Regeneration is a new way of thinking about the environment and about ourselves, based on hope, optimism, and the ability of people and nature to renew from within. Regenerative environmental education reaches beyond the classroom and into the student's life and community. This collection of activities provides students with ideas and experiences that nurture a sense of wonder about the world and about themselves; encourage self-discovery and the sharing of individual perceptions; and broaden students views and knowledge of nature, community, and self. Activities for grades K-6 include a nature walk, appreciating nature with all the senses, writing the "life story" of a drop of water, nurturing a seed, a farm visit, discussion of helpful garden insects and creatures, considering the unique contributions of diverse others in the community, developing awareness of positive feelings and well-being, and brainstorming about community improvement. Activities for grades 7-12 include investigation of environmental pollution in the community, appreciation of Earth as a living regenerative force, writing a "commercial" about Mother Nature, backyard wildlife observation, discussion of regenerative farming systems, mapping of food sources, identification of toxic substances in the home, analysis of nutritional content and cost of favorite foods, reaching personal goals through positive feelings, exploring community assets and the role of small businesses, and recycling trash. The materials include activity cards for grades K-6 and 7-12, student worksheets, a teachers' food analysis factsheet, an evaluation questionnaire, and a classroom poster. (SV)
