The University Library and the Doctoral Dissertation in Professional Education: A Case Study.
Counelis, James Steve
This case study provides both systemic and systematic analyses of the university library's role in the knowledge transmission function and doctoral-level research needs in professional education. Based on a self-study of the School of Education (with five doctoral programs) and two university libraries at the University of San Francisco, the report describes a study of the bibliographical citations in a representative sample of the 618 School of Education doctoral dissertations on file and cataloged in Gleeson Library. Research questions to be answered through the study are delineated, i.e., whether the university libraries possess adequate holdings and the range of holdings needed to service the research needs of doctoral students, and whether they provide supporting research services that supplement their holdings. Seven facets of the study are discussed: (1) the method of random sampling and tests of the representativeness of the sample set of 62 dissertations; (2) the two sets of variables established for the case study, i.e., the 14 identifying variables for the dissertations and the five variables for the 4,277 non-duplicate citations; (3) the interdisciplinary character of the university library; (4) a citational profile of the doctoral dissertation; (5) the range of professional literature; (6) the depth of the university collection in terms of doctoral research; and (7) the nature of full support academic information services. Various supporting materials are appended, including displays of the data analyses in 14 tables and one chart. (CGD)
