The Practicum in Educational Administration: Still Useful but Major Changes Are Needed.
Runkel, James A.
The Department of Educational Administration, Higher Education, and Educational Research at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) uses the practicum in educational administration at the master's degree level as its primary vehicle in preparing school administrators. After listing and responding to the most frequent criticisms of the practicum program, this document reports the findings from a survey of 38 institutions with graduate programs in educational administration nationwide, of which 13 were in North Carolina. Twenty-eight responses (66%) were collected. The purpose of the survey was to determine how these colleges and universities conduct the practicum, in order to guide the Department of Educational Administration at UNCG in its plans to improve and extend its own practicum program. The survey instrument included four sections, of which the first three requested the same information, respectively, about each institution's Master's Degree, Ed.S. Degree (or equivalent), and Ed.D. degrees in educational administration. Section IV consisted of two general questions on how the practicum programs differ from each other and on whether additional information would be useful. General findings, conclusions, and recommendations are enumerated, and then results for each item of the survey are reported in detail. (TE)
