This report describes major education initiatives in support of economic development in New York State. The report sketches the major changes taking place in New York State's economy and reviews the role of educational institutions in upgrading standards, retraining the state's labor force, and providing information and research services. It also describes initiatives that directly affect the availability of a skilled work force and activities that contribute to the long-term economic health of New York State. Initiatives by the governor and the legislature to enhance economic development through education in the following five areas are discussed: (1) youth programs; (2) adult programs; (3) access programs; (4) teacher preparation/professional development; and (5) institutional resources. Appended is a list of programs and contact persons responsible for education-related economic development initiatives. (SI)
