Developing Assertive Behavior.
Ohio State Univ., Columbus. Center for Sex Equity.
This curriculum is designed to provide students with specific techniques for communicating more assertively and dealing with manipulative behavior more effectively. The curriculum outlines five 40-minute sessions, each including appropriate student worksheets and transparency masters. The first session focuses on distinguishing among assertive, aggressive, and submissive behaviors. The second session explores self-respect, and the negative effects on self-concept of aggressive and submissive behaviors. The third session focuses on values clarification and recognition that assertive living involves taking responsibility and accepting the consequences. The fourth session develops coping skills by helping students determine their effectiveness in upholding and respecting others' rights. The final session focuses on helping students to plan for the future and establish goals for living assertively in the future. Additional materials for the instructor wishing to expand or adjust the program are provided in the appendices. A pretest and posttest are included to be used to measure knowledge acquired as a result of this study and to solicit assertive feedback from students regarding the course quality. (ABL)
